Signs of God: Evidence of His Existence in Creation

From the tiniest atom to the largest creation in this universe, everything proves the existence of Allah Ta’ala. The vast seven-layered heavens above us, the seven-layered earth beneath our feet, the millions of planets and stars floating in space, the turbulent seas and oceans, and the towering mountains on Earth—all of these silently bear witness. These are the signs of God, testifying to the existence of the great Lord. Even after this clear evidence, for those who are skeptical about the Creator’s existence, Allah Himself awakens their understanding by unequivocally rejecting all room for doubt about His Great Being, saying:
اَفِي اللهِ شَكٌّ فَاطِرِ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الْاَرْضِ.
“Is there any doubt about Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth?”
(Surah Ibrahim (14):10)
In truth, within every fold of this universe’s creation, the evidence of Allah Rabbul ‘Alamin’s existence is so brilliantly clear that it compels a thinking person towards the path of faith. From the creation of humanity to all other creations, the wondrous signs of that masterful craftsman are scattered everywhere.
Knowing the Creator by Observing Creation
There is a common saying: you can know the architect by the architecture, the writer by the writing, and the poet by the poem. Then, by observing this vast creation, can we not know the great Allah who brought it into existence? Allah Ta’ala points to these powerful signs of God, saying:
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, there are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], ‘Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'”
(Surah Ali ‘Imran (3):190-191)
Those who are wise understand just by looking at this created world that an All-Wise Planner is behind it. They do not consider Allah’s creation to be in vain; rather, through it, they realize the Creator’s glory and seek refuge in Him alone.
The Signs of God in Human Existence
If a person looks at their own existence with inner sight, they will surely see how many wondrous signs of God are hidden within them. Allah says:
“And on the earth are signs for the certain [in faith], And in yourselves. Then will you not see?”
(Surah Adh-Dhariyat (51):20-21)
Has a person ever deeply considered who gave them such a beautiful form in the dark chamber of the mother’s womb? Who created complex organs like eyes for sight and ears for hearing? Who designed the perfect system of a tongue for tasting and a nose for smelling? It was He who gave them a brain for thinking and the power of speech for talking. By whose command did a stream of milk flow in the mother’s breast for them after birth? In whose hands are their health and sickness controlled? And ultimately, who is the sole supreme controller of their life and death?
In response to each of these questions, a person’s conscience and fitrah (innate nature) are compelled to scream that all of this is the creation of that one Great Being, who sees everything while being unseen, who is the All-Wise, the possessor of infinite power and might, the Almighty. He is Allah.
Rain and Germination: Wondrous Signs of God
To prove His existence and power, Allah Ta’ala did not introduce complex philosophical theories in the Holy Quran. Instead, He presented examples of the visible objects around us, so that even ordinary people can think about these clear signs of God and find proof of His existence.
The soft and tender sprout that emerges, splitting the earth, from a hard and tough fruit pit or seed is a manifestation of Allah’s unseen power. Pointing to this, the Quran states:
اِنَّ اللهَ فَالِقُ الْحَبِّ وَ النَّوٰي يُخْرِجُ الْحَيَّ مِنَ الْمَيِّتِ وَ مُخْرِجُ الْمَيِّتِ مِنَ الْحَيِّ ذٰلِكُمُ اللهُ فَاَنّٰي تُؤْفَكُوْنَ.
“Indeed, Allah is the splitter of the grain and the date seed. He brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living. That is Allah; so how are you deluded?”
(Surah Al-An’am (6):95)
Similarly, the natural property of water is to flow downwards. Yet we see surface water turn into vapor from the sun’s heat, rise into the sky, and transform into clouds. What force on Earth lifts water into the sky against its nature? Surely, an unseen Supreme Being is behind this, whose flawless cosmic management makes this impossibility possible. Then, from those clouds, He sends down water as rain, which refreshes and fertilizes the earth.
With this water, Allah produces fruits of diverse colors, tastes, and shapes. Allah says:
“Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby fruits of varying colors…”
(Surah Fatir (35):27)
From the same soil and water, thousands of types of fruits like mangoes, berries, jackfruits, apples, pomegranates, and grapes are produced. Within the same species of fruit, how many varieties, tastes, and colors exist! Does the soil create this diversity by its own power? If so, all fruits would have the same color, taste, and shape. Therefore, the creator of these wondrous signs of God is undoubtedly the great Allah.
Human Will vs. God’s Decree
Human limitation is a great proof of Allah’s limitless power. A person holds thousands of hopes and makes countless plans, but does he fulfill all his wishes? A businessman invests huge capital hoping for profit, but sometimes loses everything. No person wants to fail, yet failure is a part of their life. Who is the being that determines the outcome against their will? This itself is one of the clearest signs of God.
Someone undergoes years of treatment and prayers to have a child but remains childless. In contrast, another tries various methods to avoid having children, yet a child’s arrival in their home continues. A person desires a long life, but sudden death comes and stops them. Has any king or tycoon on Earth ever prevented death with money or power?
We did not come into this world by our own will, nor will we leave by our own will. We are completely helpless before the will of a Supreme Power. This helplessness proves that we have a Master or Controller. We are the creation, so we have a Creator. We are provided for, so we have a Provider. He is Allah, who holds absolute power over all things.
Fitrah: The Innate Realization of the Creator
In reality, realizing Allah’s existence is not a matter of complex research that only scientists can achieve. Rather, it is a feeling embedded deep within a person’s ‘Fitrah’ or innate nature. Even a naive child or a person far from civilization feels with their heart that a Creator of this vast world exists. The atheist claim that everything came into being on its own is contrary to human nature and reason. These innate feelings are among the most profound signs of God.
Because of this innate realization, Allah Ta’ala, when introducing Himself, points to the created world around us instead of resorting to complex arguments. He is the one who has given every single thing its proper form and then guided it.
“Our Lord is He who gave each thing its form and then guided [it].”
(Surah Taha (20):50)
Once, someone asked Imam Shafi’i (may Allah have mercy on him) about the existence of Allah. He replied, “Look at the leaf of a mulberry tree; in it, you will find proof of Allah’s existence.” When they asked for an explanation, he said, “When a silkworm eats this same leaf, it produces silk thread. When a bee consumes its nectar, it makes honey and When a goat or deer eats it, the result is droppings or valuable musk.”
The same leaf, yet different animals consuming it produce different substances. Is this a characteristic of the leaf itself? If it were, the same thing would emerge in every case. Therefore, an unseen orchestrator must be behind it, creating different things from one leaf according to His will.
Conclusion
Every atom of the universe, every living and non-living thing, bears witness to the existence of Allah, His oneness, and His infinite knowledge and power. The creation of the heavens and the earth, the alternation of day and night, the falling of rain from the clouds, bringing life from dead land, the birth and death of humans, and the diversity of colors and languages in creation—all these things are undeniable signs of God.
For a believer, these signs strengthen their faith. For a truth-seeker, they guide the way towards the Creator. Therefore, we should think deeply about the world around us and find the glory of the Creator in every creation. For, it is those with knowledge who truly fear Allah and surrender themselves before Him.
“…Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Forgiving.”
(Surah Fatir (35):28)
